Birthday Surprise…

I’ve always been a big fan of surprise birthday parties, and over the weekend, I got to be a part of one big heck of a surprise! Remember Zack and Sara from game-night last week? Well, this past Friday was Sara’s birthday, and Zack threw a surprise party that did not disappoint.

Zack somehow managed to gather not just a handful of Sara’s friends from back home, but a few carloads of Sara’s closest friends to make the trek from her stomping grounds of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They drove a good 9 hours (one way) to good ‘ole Charlotte for the weekend. Yes, just the weekend. Oh, and did I mention one of the girls brought her newborn baby (along with her hubby)? Now that is what true friendship is made out of!

best friends forever

In fact, see that head cut out and taped to a stick? Well, that’s Jamie (correct me if I’m wrong, ladies!) She just had twins not too long ago, and therefore could not make the trip… for obvious reasons. One baby for a 9 hour road trip is probably enough. But that’s just my opinion.

Anyway, we thought it’d be fun to split the night up into two “surprises.” All of the local folk stayed out in the common area for the initial surprise, and the rest of the Jersey crew headed off to Zack’s bedroom to give Sara the shock of a lifetime.

Getting set up in Zack’s bedroom…

From the look (and tears) on Sara’s face, I’d say both surprises were pretty amazing.

Smile pretty 🙂

The look on Sara’s face when she first entered Zack’s apartment was priceless.

So happy!

She was completely floored and had zero clue that anything had been planned!  When she walked in the door, she was greeted by all of her Charlotte friends (read: me, Ryan, Ryan’s old roomie Jon and his girlfriend Sarah, some of their co-workers…Haley, Kelly, Caitlin, Jill, and a few of Zack’s other buddies).

Hugs all around

Birthday girl!

After some mingling and a whole bunch of “I can’t believe he pulled this off” talk from Sara, Zack instructed Sara to follow him to the bedroom where he had her birthday present waiting for her.

"Let me take you to my room..."

aaaaaaaand another surprise!!!

…Aka, all of her friends from Yankee-land!

Birthday attack!

ahmahgawd... tha PAHTEE’S HEEEYAHHH!

Fortunately Snooki already had plans for the weekend and could not make it down… (I had to do it)

I count at least 5 birthday party hats huddled together…

Such joy!

There were tears from the moment Sara moved the bedroom door aside, and lots of them. From everyone (well, except the baby!). Seeing how much Sara’s friends love and care about her is a true testament to how neat of a gal Sara is, (and how lucky we are to have her here in Charlotte!).

I’d say Zack won some *major* boyfriend points with this one

Love everything about what this picture captures…

Make a wish!

Bottoms up

Seriously, major props go out to Zack for pulling this off. The fact that he successfully put this together and somehow kept a close-knit group of girlfriends from spilling the beans for who knows how many weeks… is beyond me! With all of the social media out there… Facebook, texting, twitter, email, smokesignals (oh wait, is that just me and Pip? Mmkay, good to know…) I’m quite impressed he was able to pull it off with such great success!

Zack has seriously upped the ante for all of the boyfriends who run in my circle of friends (Totally kidding….except, not really). That’s right guys, you heard me… I know you’re reading. Now go give Zack a pat on the back.

Do any of y’all like attending surprise parties? Have you ever had a surprise party thrown in your honor? What’s the sweetest thing your boyfriend has ever done for you?? Ohhh I can’t wait to hear the feedback, I LOVE this kind of stuff!

  1. How fun! We did a double surprise party like that for a friend a few years ago. A group of our friends surprised her, then did a birthday scavenger hunt around town. While we were gone, the rest of her friends showed up at her house and were there to surprise her when we got back!

  2. Yea! I love birthday surprises! So much more fun 🙂

You have perfectly captured (in words and photos) one of the most memorable moments of my life. Sara means so much to me and she has made so many sacrifices for our group of “hometown friends” since her move to NC that this was the least we could do.
Thanks so much for this blog; it is officially the “icing on the cake”!
You are a sweetheart and it was so nice to meet you- please keep in touch.
Love, Jaime “G” (not the one on the stick- ha-ha)!

    • Hi Jamie! I’m so glad that you and everyone else were able to make it down to Charlotte. You and all of the others were just so much fun, and Sara is so blessed to have y’all!! So glad you liked my little “recap” of the party, feel free to stop back any time!!

  13. That is so amazingly sweet! I had a surprise 16th birthday party and had zero clue that is was going to happen! I haven’t actually been to too many surprises parities that I can remember but the few I have were fun! My boyfriend had done quite a few sweet things, one recently was chasing me around Disney World to see me running my half marathon, I honestly expected him to stay in bed and meet me at the finish, he can still surprise me after 6 years!
